Fluorescence Based Methods for Rapid Diagnosis of Malaria

چکیده
Malaria imposes great socio-economic burden on humanity and one of the highest killer diseases affecting most tropical countries. More than 2 billion people (40% of the world's population) live in areas where malaria is endemic. It was estimated that over 250 million people worldwide contracted malaria in 2002 (Doderer et al., 2007). According to the UNICEF, in every minute, malaria kills a child in the world (UNICEF-Health-Malaria). Of all the human malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) is most pathogenic and frequently fatal if not treated in time (UNICEF-Health-Malaria). In India, according to Nandwani et al. (2005) a total of 1.82 million cases of malaria and 0.89 million cases of P. falciparum cases were reported in the year 2002. According to National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP, 2001–12) there were 10,66,981 malaria positive cases and 5,33,535 P. falciparum in the year 2012.

Laboratory diagnosis methods of malaria infection
Background and Aim: To manage and control malaria - one of the most important infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical regions – a quick and accurate malaria diagnosis method is necessary as a high priority. For this purpose, several methods have been developed for the diagnosis of malaria, and currently, the examining the peripheral blood slide with an optical microscope as a gold stand...
متن کاملCost-Effectiveness analysis of malaria diagnosis techniques in patients with suspected malaria in Hormozgan province- 2012
Introduction: Since ancient times Malaria in Iran has been considered as a serious health risk, especially in Hormozgan Province, as no other disease like Malaria has imposed irreparable financial and life losses to the country. Since saving costs in the healthcare sector comes as first priority in most countries, this study aims at launching a cost-effectiveness analysis on malaria diagnosis d...
متن کاملFluorescence microscope (Cyscope®) for malaria diagnosis in pregnant women in Medani Hospital, Sudan
BACKGROUND Accuracy of diagnosis is the core for malaria control. Although microscopy is the gold standard in malaria diagnosis, its reliability is largely dependent on user skill. We compared performance of Cyscope fluorescence microscope with the Giemsa stained light microscopy for the diagnosis of malaria among pregnant women at Medani Hospital in Central Sudan. The area is characterized by ...
متن کاملRapid diagnosis of malaria by fluorescence microscopy with light microscope and interference filter.
Fluorochrome staining to detect malaria parasites in bloodfilms is more sensitive, is easier to do, and is less time-consuming than Giemsa staining. However, standard epi-illuminated, mercury vapour, fluorescence microscopes are expensive, especially for tropical countries where malaria is endemic. Fluorescence microscopy with a standard light microscope and a new interference filter specially ...
متن کاملValidation of microscopic diagnosis of malaria in field laboratories of malarious areas of Iran by Nested PCR
Introduction: Examination of Geimsa stained blood smears is the main method of malaria diagnosis in our country, however, accuracy of results is largely depended on the skill and laboratory conditions. This study was designed and carried out to assess the current situation and to determine the effectiveness and quality improvement of malaria diagnosis program. Methods: In this analytical s...
متن کاملEvaluation of different methods for diagnosis of P. falciparum malaria.
Rapid diagnosis is a prerequisite for institution of effective treatment and reducing the mortality and morbidity of falciparum malaria. This study was taken up to compare the efficacy of various rapid methods viz, acridine orange, Plasmodium falciparum histidine rich protein II antigen detection and Field's stain with traditional microscopy i.e, Leishman stain for diagnosing falciparum malaria...
